Divination has been practiced across cultures for thousands of years as a way of seeking guidance, developing intuition, and exploring what may exist beyond our ordinary senses.
For some people, divination is part of a spiritual practice used to connect with guides, ancestors, divine wisdom, or the spirit world. For others, it becomes a quiet practice of reflection that helps them notice feelings, patterns, symbols, dreams, and inner guidance they may otherwise overlook.
There is no single right way to practice divination. Allow your intuition to be your guide.
Finding the Right Tool for You
Tarot, Oracle cards, runes, pendulums, dowsing rods, scrying mirrors, crystal balls, candle gazing, crystals, dreams, and signs from nature can all become part of an intuitive practice.
The most important part is not the tool itself. It is your intention, your awareness, your discernment, and the sacred space you create around the practice.
Choosing the Right Time for Divination
There is no single perfect time to practice divination, but certain moments may naturally feel more supportive for intuition, reflection, prayer, and spiritual connection.
Sometimes you intentionally choose the moment. Other times, the moment seems to choose you.
Perhaps you have an unusually vivid dream. You keep seeing the same number, animal, symbol, feather, or name. Someone you love who has passed suddenly comes strongly into your thoughts. You enter a room and feel that the atmosphere has changed, or you simply sense that something around you is asking for your attention.
Before reaching for a divination tool, become still for a moment and notice your own response.
Does the experience feel peaceful, loving, familiar, or comforting? Or does something feel heavy, confusing, uncomfortable, or intrusive?
Your intuition and discernment should guide not only how you connect, but also when you choose to connect. You never need to engage simply because you sense a presence or shift in energy.
If something does not feel right, trust that feeling. Ground yourself, clear your space, say a prayer, and return to your practice another time.
Following the Phases of the Moon
The phases of the Moon can provide a beautiful natural rhythm for divination.
The New Moon is traditionally associated with beginnings, setting intentions, and asking what you are being called to create, explore, or welcome into your life.
The Waxing Moon can be a meaningful time for questions surrounding growth, manifestation, creativity, and what you would like to strengthen.
The Full Moon is often associated with illumination and heightened awareness. This can be a powerful time to explore what needs to be revealed, understood, acknowledged, or released.
The Waning Moon invites clearing, protection, release, and letting go of energies, habits, or patterns you no longer wish to carry.
You do not have to wait for a particular lunar phase to practice divination. Instead, allow the Moon to become another layer of intention within your spiritual practice.
When the Veil Feels Thin
Across many spiritual traditions, there are certain times when the boundary between the physical and spiritual worlds is believed to feel thinner.
Samhain, seasonal transitions, the solstices, equinoxes, eclipses, and significant lunar events have long been associated with heightened spiritual awareness and reflection.
You may notice a familiar scent without knowing where it came from, hear a meaningful song at exactly the right moment, experience a vivid dream, or repeatedly encounter the same symbol or animal.
Notice your emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations. Write down what happened. Pay attention to whether the experience feels peaceful, familiar, comforting, or unsettling.
If the moment feels right, this can be a beautiful time to reach for your chosen divination tool and ask for greater understanding.
You might ask what am I meant to understand from this experience, what should I pay attention to right now, or what guidance is available to me at this time?
Choosing the right time for divination is as much about listening to yourself as it is about watching the Moon or the seasons.
Preparing Your Divination Space
Before beginning any form of divination, create an environment that helps you feel grounded, peaceful, protected, and focused.
Your sacred space does not need to be elaborate. A small altar, table, quiet corner, garden space, comfortable chair, or even a special cloth placed beneath your divination tools can become sacred when approached with intention.
Begin by removing distractions and creating a feeling of calm. Turn off unnecessary noise, silence your phone, and give yourself enough time that you do not feel rushed.
Clear Your Space
Many spiritual traditions begin sacred work by clearing the space.
You may choose to use sage, Palo Santo, incense, prayer, bells, singing bowls, candlelight, or simply open a window and allow fresh air to move through the room.
If you use smoke cleansing, allow the smoke to move gently around your divination area while holding the intention that stagnant or unwanted energy leave the space.
Choose the cleansing practice that feels aligned with your own spiritual beliefs.

Set Your Intention
Intention is one of the most important parts of divination.
Before opening yourself to spiritual communication, become clear about what you are welcoming into your space and what you are not.
You may quietly say:
May this space be protected. May only loving and benevolent guidance be welcomed here. May I receive what is meant for my highest good. May I be given clarity and discernment in understanding what I receive.
Your intention creates a boundary around your practice.
Divination should not feel like opening a door without knowing what you are inviting inside. You are creating sacred space with purpose.
Be clear about what you are asking, remain grounded, and trust yourself if at any point you feel that it is time to stop.
Choose Your Crystal Companion
Crystals can become beautiful companions within a divination practice. You may wear them, hold them during meditation, place them beside your cards, position them near a scrying mirror, or arrange them around your sacred space.
Choose your crystal companion according to the intention you are bringing into your practice.
Clear Quartz
Clear Quartz is often known in crystal traditions as a power crystal and programming crystal because it is used to hold and amplify an intention.
Before beginning your divination practice, hold your Clear Quartz and consciously program it with your intention. You may ask for clarity, spiritual guidance, discernment, or greater awareness during your session.
Clear Quartz is also commonly used to expand and amplify energy, making it a beautiful stone to place near Tarot cards, pendulums, runes, scrying tools, or other crystals.

Labradorite
Labradorite is commonly associated in modern crystal traditions with intuition, spiritual exploration, transformation, and awareness of the unseen.
It can be worn during divination or placed beside your chosen tool when you want to create a more contemplative and intuitive atmosphere.
Labradorite may be especially appealing when working with Tarot, Oracle cards, dreams, scrying, or symbolic messages.

Selenite
Selenite is commonly associated in metaphysical traditions with clearing, purification, higher awareness, and angelic connection.
Place Selenite near your altar or divination space before beginning your practice. Some people also use it as part of their ritual for clearing the atmosphere before and after spiritual work.
If your intention centers around prayer, peaceful spiritual communication, or what you understand as angelic guidance, Selenite can be a beautiful addition to your sacred space.
Clear the space, set the intention, and invite only what feels aligned with love and your highest good.

Choosing Your Divination Tool
Once your space is prepared and your intention is clear, choose the divination method that feels most natural to you.
You do not need to learn everything at once. Begin with one practice and allow yourself time to become familiar with it.
The goal is not perfection. The goal is connection, awareness, and learning to recognize your own intuitive language.
Tarot and Oracle Cards
Tarot and Oracle cards are among the most recognized forms of divination.
Tarot traditionally follows a system of 78 cards divided into the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana. Each card contains layers of imagery and symbolism that can be explored through traditional meanings as well as personal intuition.
Oracle decks are more open in their structure. They may focus on angels, crystals, herbs, animals, ancestors, astrology, the Moon, affirmations, spiritual messages, or countless other themes.
If you are beginning, do not feel pressured to memorize every meaning.
Shuffle your cards while holding your question or intention in your mind. Pull one card and study the image before opening the guidebook.
Notice what catches your attention first. Pay attention to the emotion the card creates, the symbols that stand out, and any immediate thoughts or memories that arise.
Then read the traditional interpretation and compare it with what you intuitively noticed.
Over time, you may discover that your personal intuitive impressions become an important part of your readings.

Pendulum Divination
Pendulums offer a simple and approachable way to begin exploring divination.
Hold your pendulum gently and allow it to become completely still.
Ask Show me yes and notice the movement. Then ask Show me no and observe again.
Some pendulums may move clockwise and counterclockwise. Others may move from side to side or forward and backward.
Your pendulum may develop its own language with you.
Begin by asking questions where you already know the answer. This allows you to become familiar with how your pendulum responds before moving into questions where the answer is unknown.
A pendulum mat can also give you a visual reference for yes, no, maybe, and additional responses.

Reading the Runes
Runes carry an ancient symbolic language and can become a deeply personal divination practice.
Rather than attempting to memorize every symbol at once, build your relationship with the runes gradually.
Choose one rune, write its symbol in your journal, learn its traditional meaning, and then notice whether its themes appear throughout your day.
As your understanding grows, you can begin experimenting with three rune readings and larger spreads.
Runes can be especially meaningful for those drawn toward ancient symbolism, mythology, ancestral traditions, and intuitive wisdom.

Working With Dowsing Rods
Dowsing rods have traditionally been associated with locating water and underground resources and are also used within modern spiritual and energetic practices.
Our copper dowsing rods are sacred tools used to connect with the unseen energies of the Earth.
Handcrafted from pure copper, these L shaped divining rods are highly responsive to subtle movement, making them an interesting tool for spiritual seekers, healers, and energy workers exploring energetic spaces.
Hold one rod gently in each hand and keep your grip relaxed enough for the rods to move freely.
Begin by asking the rods to show you yes, then ask them to show you no.
You can also slowly move through a room, garden, or outdoor area and observe when the rods cross, open, or change direction.
Do not try to force the movement. Relax, observe, and become familiar with how your tools respond.

Scrying and the Art of Gazing
Scrying is one of the oldest and most mysterious forms of divination.
It involves entering a quiet, receptive state while gazing into a reflective surface, water, crystal, flame, or another focal point and allowing images, symbols, impressions, emotions, or intuitive messages to emerge.
Throughout history, people have practiced forms of scrying by gazing into bowls of water, polished stones, reflective surfaces, and crystal balls.
Within spiritual traditions, these impressions may be interpreted as coming from intuition, the subconscious, guides, ancestors, or the spirit world.
The purpose is not to stare intensely or force yourself to see something.
Soften your gaze and allow the experience to unfold naturally.
Working With a Black Obsidian Scrying Mirror
A Black Obsidian Scrying Mirror provides a dark reflective surface that can help reduce visual distractions and encourage a quiet, meditative state.
Prepare and cleanse your space first. Set your intention and place any grounding or protection crystals nearby.
Dim the room and position your mirror where you can comfortably gaze into it without seeing a strong reflection of yourself. A candle placed nearby can provide a small amount of soft reflected light.
Take several slow breaths and relax your eyes. Rather than focusing intensely on one point, look softly into the depth of the mirror.
At first you may simply notice shifting light, shadows, colors, shapes, or patterns. With practice, some people describe seeing more distinct images, places, faces, memories, symbols, or receiving sudden intuitive impressions.
Do not rush to decide what everything means.
Observe first. Interpret later.
Keeping a journal nearby can be helpful. Write down what you experienced after the session and notice whether certain symbols or impressions begin repeating over time.

Scrying With Water and Crystal
You do not need a mirror to explore scrying.
Water scrying has ancient roots. A dark bowl filled with water can create a reflective surface for gazing. Moonlight or candlelight reflecting gently across the water can create subtle patterns that encourage the mind to relax and enter a receptive state.
A crystal ball can be approached in a similar way.
Rather than expecting an entire scene to suddenly appear, notice the subtle impressions. You may notice a flash of color, a shape, a face, a place, a memory, an unexpected word, or a sudden emotion.
Divination often begins with something subtle.
Instead of asking only What am I seeing? also ask What am I feeling as I see it?
Your intuition can help you explore whether an image feels meaningful, symbolic, familiar, or simply connected with changing reflections and light.
Candle Gazing
Candle gazing can also become part of a divination practice.
Light a candle within your prepared sacred space and spend a few moments becoming quiet.
Allow your gaze to rest softly on the flame without straining your eyes. As you ask a question, say a prayer, or begin communication, notice what happens.
The flame may flicker, become still, grow brighter, or lean in a particular direction.
Normal air currents and natural variations in a burning candle can affect its movement, so every change does not need to carry a spiritual meaning.
Instead, notice the flame alongside your own intuitive impressions, thoughts, and feelings.
The flame can also simply become a meditative focus that helps quiet the mind enough for images, memories, emotions, or insights to surface.
Protect Your Energy and Trust Your Discernment
No matter which divination tool you choose, remain grounded throughout the experience.
Wear or place protection crystals within your space if that is part of your practice. Keep your intention clear and pay attention to how you feel.
If an experience becomes uncomfortable or something does not feel right, stop.
You are never required to continue a reading, scrying session, or spiritual communication simply because you have begun.
Clear your space again using sage, Palo Santo, prayer, sound, fresh air, or your preferred cleansing practice.
Remember that intuition is not only something you use to receive messages.
Intuition is also what tells you when not to engage.
Closing Your Divination Space
Beginning your practice intentionally is important, but so is closing it intentionally.
When your session is complete, acknowledge that the experience has ended.
Thank God, the Divine, your guides, ancestors, or whichever spiritual presence you invited according to your personal beliefs.
You might say:
Thank you for the guidance I was meant to receive. This session is now complete. I close this sacred space and release any energies that are not mine to carry.
Put away your cards, runes, pendulum, dowsing rods, mirror, or crystal ball. Extinguish your candle and cleanse your space again if you feel called to.
Ground yourself by holding a grounding crystal, drinking water, stepping outside, touching the Earth, or simply taking several slow breaths and returning your attention completely to the present moment.
Open the door with intention and close the door with intention.
Allow yourself time to explore, learn, practice, journal, and notice patterns without feeling that you need to master every form of divination. Enjoy your experiences and Live Life Magically!
